Overview Type 1 Diabetes is thought of as a condition that primarily occurs in childhood and adolescence, but this condition does occur in adults and is often misdiagnosed as Type 2 diabetes. In fact, Type 1 diabetes is equally likely to happen in the first six decades of life with over 42% of all cases occurring between the ages of 40-60 years of age. And current estimates indicate that as much as 40% of adults diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes actually have Type 1 diabetes. It is critical that primary care nurse practitioners (NPs) understand the distinguishing characteristics of Type 1 diabetes in adults so early detection and recognition can occur. It is equally important NPs appreciate the unique challenges associated with the management and treatment of this unique population. This presentation will utilize case studies to demonstrate the practical application of guidelines and best practices in the primary care setting for the management of Type 1 diabetes in adults.
Objectives
- Verbalize at least 1 influencing factor in the misdiagnosis of diabetes in adults.
- Identify at least 2 of the unique clinical characteristics of adults with Type 1 Diabetes.
- Recognize treatment and management strategies for adults with Type 1 Diabetes.
