Overview:
Nurse practitioners in a wide variety of setting are key to identification and treatment of numerous conditions affecting women of all ages. As guidelines change, and occasionally seem to conflict, NPs must be able to individualize recommendations for screening, testing and treatment using the most current recommendations and a shared decision -approach.
In this first of a two-part series, women’s health expert faculty Kahlil Demonbreun, Lisa Chism and Nancy Berman will discuss key updates in women’s health-related testing guidelines including Cervical cancer screening and testing, Osteoporosis and Breast Health. Today’s podcast is intended as a broad overview of the most recent changes.

Nancy R. Berman specializes in women’s healthcare at Michigan Healthcare Professionals, in Farmington Hills, Michigan. She has been a nurse practitioner since 1978 and holds certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner and as a Menopause Society Certified Menopause Practitioner. She received her BSN from the University of Michigan and MSN from Wayne State University. She served on the board of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) from 2010 to 2016 and as Course Director of the ASCCP Comprehensive Colposcopy Course for a 2-year term from 2017 to 2019. She represents NPWH on the ASCCP Committee for the Enduring Guidelines for the Management of Abnormal Cervical Cancer Screening Tests and Cancer Precursors. She is on the Working Group for HPV self-sampling with the Enduring Guidelines Committee. She is the author of numerous publications that have appeared in journals including Advance for Nurse Practitioners, The Nurse Practitioner, and Women’s Healthcare, A Clinical Journal for NPs and on multiple book chapters. She was inducted as a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners in 2015.

Dr. Lisa Chism is the clinical director of Oakland Macomb Center for Breast Health. Dr. Chism holds three specialty certifications which include certification as a Menopause Practitioner through the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), certification as sexuality counselor through the American Association of Sexuality Therapists, Counselors and Therapists and recently she became certified in breast care through the Oncology Nursing Society. Dr. Chism has established a dedicated menopause and sexual health clinic caring for the menopausal and sexual health needs of women who have a history of breast cancer or are at elevated risk for breast cancer. Dr. Chism is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and was selected as Menopause Practitioner of the year 2011. She formally served on the Board of Directors at the North American Menopause Society as well as a federal advisory committee with the CDC regarding breast cancer in young women. In October 2021 Dr. Chism was inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing

Dr. Kahlil Demonbreun currently serves as the Women’s Health Medical Director at the Columbia Veteran Affairs Health Care System, where he maintains a daily clinical practice as a WHNP and leads a dedicated team of health care providers in the provision of care to females. Throughout his greater than 35-year nursing career he has consistently shattered the glass ceiling as a pioneer clinician in women’s health nursing. He co led the ANA Scopes and Standards 4th. Ed. Workgroup and has served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health (NPWH) and is the past Secretary/Treasurer on the Board of Directors for the National Certification Corporation.
He demonstrates leadership in healthcare as an author, advisor, advocate, educator, paid consultant, mentor, practice regulator, and preceptor. He is an established “first” as a male in many aspects of women’s health and is the first male WHNP in the country to earn a DNP degree. He is a Fellow of AANP; Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing; AANP State Award for Excellence recipient; the Point of Care Network America’s Top Nurse Practitioner Award in Women’s Health, and the NPWH Inspirations in Women’s Health Award recipient.
