Overview
Pharyngitis continues to be one the most frequent complaints in outpatient settings, accounting for more than 12 million United States healthcare visits annually (Ashurst & Edgerley-Gibb, 2022). Young et al. (2020) found that viral upper respiratory symptoms were among the top three conditions in which antibiotics were inappropriately prescribed, including strep pharyngitis. The updated 2018 Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) guidelines stress the importance of using laboratory testing to diagnose strep pharyngitis (Miller et al, 2018). Furthermore, pharyngitis should only be treated with antibiotics if proven to be of bacterial origin (Ashurst & Edgerley-Gibb, 2022).
