Overview
This course is designed for advanced practice providers who desire to enhance their clinical decision-making skills and expertise regarding pediatric differential diagnosis and patient management. Through a series of case study presentations, participants will engage in discussions to effectively identify, evaluate, and manage challenging presentations in pediatric patients. Each case discussed will serve as a platform to focus on significant clinical pearls and common pitfalls including the interpretation of the history and physical examination, formulation of a differential diagnosis, and appropriate utilization of diagnostic tools and tests in pediatric patients. The complexity of caring for a pediatric patient focusing on subtle symptoms, identification of red flags, and the impact of developmental stages will be included. In addition, this course will include a discussion of appropriate clinical guidelines and evidence-based management strategies to optimize patient outcomes.
Objectives
Through the discussion of case studies, identify critical components of the clinical decision-making process that leads to an accurate differential diagnosis, plan of care and evaluation for the identification and management of high-risk illness/injury in children.
Describe pearls and pitfalls associated with the accurate diagnosis and management of the following common conditions in pediatrics: vomiting, abusive head trauma, abdominal pain and fever.
Integrate evidence-based guidelines into clinical decision-making in pediatric high-risk Illness/injury conditions.

Kathleen Jordan, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, ENP-C, FAEN, FAANP Bio
Kathleen Jordan has been an advanced practice nurse in emergency care for over thirty years. During this time, she has had the privilege of working in the roles of clinician, educator, mentor, author, and researcher. She is nationally certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and an Emergency Nurse Practitioner. She is also a Fellow in the Academy of Emergency Nursing and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She was elected to the AANP Certification Board of Commissioners in 2022 and is currently serving a 3-year-term. Dr. Jordan has a deep passion for caring for the underserved and vulnerable populations, particularly children and adolescents. Dr. Jordan maintains an active clinical practice as a nurse practitioner in emergency care at Mid-Atlantic Emergency Medical Associates (MEMA), Charlotte, North Carolina. She is also a Clinical Professor at UNC Charlotte. Dr. Jordan has had multiple publications of journal articles and book chapters.
