    Overview

This comprehensive training equips nurse practitioners with essential knowledge and practical tools to recognize, respond to, and prevent female genital mutilation (FGM). Drawing on global public health data and U.S.-specific legal and clinical frameworks, the course explores the medical, psychological, cultural, and legal dimensions of FGM. Participants will learn how to engage respectfully with at-risk populations, conduct trauma-informed assessments, and collaborate across disciplines to support survivors and safeguard vulnerable girls. Through evidence-based content and real-life case studies, this course strengthens your role in identifying risk, offering care, and advocating for change in affected communities.

    Objectives
    • Define female genital mutilation (FGM) and describe its classification according to World Health Organization (WHO) categories.
    • Identify the immediate and long-term health risks associated with FGM, including physical, psychological, sexual, and obstetric complications.
    • Explain the sociocultural and migratory factors contributing to FGM practices among immigrant populations in the United States.
    • Describe available medical, psychological, and surgical interventions for the care of women and girls affected by FGM.
    • Recognize common cultural rationales for FGM and evaluate strategies to respectfully address these beliefs in clinical conversations.
    • Identify and challenge common myths and misinformation that perpetuate the practice of FGM within affected communities.
    • Discuss the roles of U.S. federal agencies and legal frameworks in addressing and preventing FGM, including reporting requirements and protections for at-risk individuals.
    • Demonstrate the nurse practitioner’s role in interdisciplinary teams working to prevent FGM and support survivors through trauma-informed, culturally sensitive care.
