Overview Chronic disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, despite advances in medical technology and treatment. Lifestyle medicine offers a cost-effective, evidence-based approach to preventing, treating, and reversing chronic conditions through therapeutic lifestyle interventions. Lifestyle medicine focuses on the six core pillars of optimal nutrition, physical activity, stress management, restorative sleep, social connection, and the avoidance of risky substances. This session will explore the burden of chronic disease and provide nurse practitioners with a practical framework for integrating the six pillars of lifestyle medicine into clinical practice. Nurse practitioners will learn how to deliver patient-centered therapeutic lifestyle medicine interventions that improve outcomes and enhance quality of life.
Objectives
- Describe the current impact and trends of the chronic disease epidemic in the United States.
- Define lifestyle medicine and its significance in managing chronic disease.
- Identify and explain the six pillars of lifestyle medicine.
- Evaluate current evidence-based guidelines that support therapeutic lifestyle interventions.
- Apply lifestyle medicine principles within advanced practice to optimize patient outcomes.
