Overview
Pneumococcal disease is the second most common cause of vaccine-preventable disease. Pneumococcal vaccination recommendations have been updated frequently over the years, and it is imperative that nurse practitioners stay updated on the new guidelines. Join NP experts Ruth Carrico and Mary Koslap-Petraco as they provide an overview of pneumococcal disease, discuss recommendations for pneumococcal vaccination and identify strategies for overcoming barriers to vaccination.
This program was revised on September 29, 2023, to reflect the updated ACIP guidelines for pneumococcal vaccination.
Objectives - Summarize the CDC recommendations regarding pneumococcal vaccination across the lifespan.
- Evaluate candidates for pneumococcal vaccination and identify the appropriate vaccine that they should receive.
- Recognize the importance of reviewing the vaccination history at every encounter across all age groups.
- Identify strategies to help ameliorate the impact that racial disparities, social determinants of health, vaccine hesitancy and provider biases have on the utilization and uptake of pneumococcal vaccination.
