Overview Diabetes is a systemic condition that can cause severe vision impairment and blindness if not managed properly. It affects all eye structures, but major complications include diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, and vitreous hemorrhage. Those with diabetes also have a higher risk of hypertensive retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusions, diabetic keratopathy, glaucoma, and cranial nerve palsies. Most complications are preventable, and screening programs can significantly reduce vision impairment.
Join two Ophthalmology experts, Tulay Cakiner-Egilmez and Diancy Torres, as they provide an in-depth review of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and risk factors associated with diabetes, with a focus on its impact on ocular health. Participants will learn to classify eye diseases linked to diabetes and explore the epidemiology and risk factors specific to diabetic retinopathy. This course also addresses the severity, progression, and evidence-based management strategies for diabetic retinopathy.
Objectives
- Review the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and risk factors associated with diabetes.
- Classify the eye diseases related to diabetes.
- Discuss the epidemiology and risk factors for diabetic retinopathy.
- Explain the severity and management of diabetic retinopathy.
- Discuss the screening and prevention of vision complications related to diabetes in primary care settings.
