Overview Cancer pain management has changed significantly over the past decade. Not only has the cancer survivorship population grown, but the methodology of cancer pain management has changed. With more knowledge about medications and potential adverse effects, along with a focus on health promotion, wellness, and disease prevention, and considering the growth of the cancer survivorship population and chronic cancer patient population, as clinicians we have the responsibility to educate our patients on appropriate cancer pain treatment. Cancer pain does not always equate to opioid therapy. This presentation will emphasize the importance of identifying an appropriate cancer pain diagnosis, and non-opioid pain management strategies that can be employed in the clinical setting.
Objectives
- Discuss the recommendations for non-opioid and complementary therapies in cancer pain management.
- Evaluate the importance of identifying a proper pain diagnosis to guide the care and management plan to cancer patients.
- Defend the use of complementary therapy and non-opioid adjuvant therapies in the management of cancer pain patients, especially in the growing survivorship population.
- Generate a medication management plan that is appropriate for specific cancer related pain syndromes.
