Overview Pneumococcal pneumonia is responsible for over 150,000 hospitalizations annually and carries a mortality rate of 5-7%, with higher rates observed in older adults. In this program, NP experts Ruth Carrico and Debra Kosko will provide an overview of pneumococcal disease and vaccination in the adult population and will provide you with an action plan to help you increase the uptake of pneumococcal vaccination in your eligible adult patients. This program was revised on November 25, 2024 to reflect the updated ACIP guidelines for adult pneumococcal vaccination.
Objectives 1. Discuss the disease burden of pneumococcal disease specific to the older and at-risk adult population. 2. Evaluate older and at-risk adults for pneumococcal vaccination and identify the appropriate vaccine that they should receive. 3. Examine the clinical trial data for emerging pneumococcal vaccines targeted to the older and at-risk adult population. 4. Identify strategies to help ameliorate the impact that racial disparities, social determinants of health and vaccine hesitancy have on the utilization and uptake of pneumococcal vaccination in the older and at-risk adult population.
