    Overview
Hypertension remains a leading modifiable cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, yet control rates continue to decline due to persistent practice gaps such as undertreatment, therapeutic inertia, and challenges in managing resistant hypertension. This activity provides nurse practitioners with an updated review of the hypertension landscape, including current guidelines, risk-based treatment strategies, and key distinctions between uncontrolled and resistant hypertension. Learners will also explore contributing factors such as medication adherence, secondary causes, and social determinants of health that impact patient outcomes.

A central focus of this program is the evolving role of novel and emerging antihypertensive therapies. Participants will examine new pharmacologic classes—including aldosterone synthase inhibitors, non-steroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, endothelin receptor antagonists, and RNA-based therapies—along with the latest clinical trial evidence supporting their use. Emphasizing patient-centered, individualized care, this activity equips nurse practitioners with practical strategies to integrate emerging treatments and optimize management of patients with complex or resistant hypertension.

    Objectives
    • Describe the prevalence and overarching clinical gravity of hypertension (HTN).
    • Examine established expert consensus and unbridged practice gaps in HTN management.
    • Differentiate between uncontrolled and resistant HTN, emphasizing the implications for clinical decision-making.
    • Summarize the pharmacology and clinical trial evidentiary base for novel and emerging antihypertensive therapeutics.
    • Design individualized treatment plans for patients with resistant HTN, integrating a synthesis of patient-specific, disease-specific, and treatment-specific factors.
