Overview Congress passed Public Law 115-1821, known as the Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Network (MISSION) Act, in 2018. The law expands Veteran access to primary and behavioral health care in community settings. Therefore, nurse practitioners and other providers who work within community settings must understand the unique health care needs of veterans. Veterans' demographic characteristics and disease burden is different than the general population. It is projected that within the next ten years there will be an increase in mental health conditions among veterans that served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Suicide is a concern in the veteran population who has a suicide rate that is about 1.9 times the rate of nonveteran adults. Suicide is a multifaceted issue that necessitates unified efforts aimed at prevention across health care settings. The Veterans Health Administration has developed clinical resources centered on veteran suicide prevention that are available to providers within community settings. Objectives
Participants will be able to explain how the MISSION and COMPACT Acts affect Veterans access to care in the community.
Participants will be able to describe the rates of mental health conditions and suicides among the veteran population versus the civilian population.
Participants will list at least two examples of suicide prevention resources created by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) that are available to primary care providers such as Nurse Practitioners.
