Overview This course focuses on key elements in the history of the development of the nurse practitioner (NP) role, including advances in education, scope and practice specialization. In addition, national certification for NPs has evolved greatly since the inception of the role. Barriers and opposition to NP practice authority have required ongoing organized effort from NP groups at the state and national level. The course also explores the historical reasons for the parallel development of the physician associate role and the need for better understanding of and cooperation between various types of healthcare providers.
Objectives
- Discuss the evolution of NP education, scope, and specialization from 1965 until today.
- Describe the history of NP certification: types of certifications and certifying bodies.
- Relate the historic and evolving role of NPs as members of the healthcare interdisciplinary team.
