Overview According to the 2021 GOLD Report, COPD is “a common, preventable and treatable disease that is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation that is due to airway and/or alveolar abnormalities usually caused by significant exposure to noxious particles or gases.” It is estimated that by the year 2060, COPD prevalence will rise to cause more than 5.4 million COPD-related deaths annually, imparting a significant global economic burden. Although tobacco is the single most preventable cause of disease, disability and death, the prevalence of smoking in the U.S. as well as developing countries continues to rise. Moreover, COPD is underreported and underrecognized by clinicians. On completion of this program, NPs and other healthcare providers will understand the prevalence and pathology of COPD, establish a diagnosis and be able to provide evidence-based treatment for patients with this debilitating disease. Join NP experts, Susan Corbridge and Corinne Young as they present 2021 COPD guideline updates utilizing 3D models and case studies.
Describe the burden of disease associated with delayed diagnosis of COPD.
Identify the indicators that must be present to establish a diagnosis of COPD.
Differentiate between COPD exacerbations and respiratory infections such as COVID-19 symptoms in the urgent care setting.
Summarize key updates to the ABCD assessment tool.
List recommended treatment strategies when initiating pharmacologic therapy in patients with COPD.
Select appropriate treatments for patients with COPD requiring follow-up therapy.
