Overview Osteoporosis is a common condition that often defies diagnosis until a person sustains a fragility fracture. These fractures can cause a significant personal burden by creating disability and increasing the risk of future fractures. The personal and systemic economic consequences are enormous. Primary care providers, ob/gyns, orthopedists, emergency department personnel and other members of the health care community are all in unique positions to detect and treat osteoporosis. This presentation will discuss the importance of preventive strategies, how to identify and diagnose osteoporosis by dexa scans and fragility fractures and how to initiate evidenced-based pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic bone health interventions.
Objectives
- Examine the prevalence of osteoporosis and fragility fractures.
- Evaluate the personal and economic burdens of Osteoporosis.
- Integrate at risk persons with appropriate diagnostic tools.
- Analyze prevention plans, and treatment options.
