Overview Adverse Childhood childhood Events events (ACE) are linked to a disruption in neurodevelopment impacting social, emotional, and cognitive function and impacting an individual’s physical and emotional health throughout their life. Trauma Trauma-Informed Care care (TIC) provides a set of principles to guide medical care and improve outcomes in the top leading causes of death associated with ACEs, including respiratory and heart disease, cancer, and suicide. With an increasing presence of NPs in primary care, NPs have the potential to incorporate screening for ACEs and implement TIC practices to avoid triggering trauma reactions in healthcare settings and improve health outcomes.
Objectives
- Identify the impact of Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) and screen for ACEs.
- Discuss the philosophy and importance of Trauma Informed Care (TIC).
- Recognize the link between ACEs, TIC, and health outcomes and how to mitigate the impact.
- Develop tools for incorporating TIC into practice.
