    Clinical Advantage:
Endocrinology Certificate for Advanced Practice Providers — Part 1

The Endocrinology Certificate Program equips nurse practitioners and physician associates with comprehensive, practice-ready knowledge to assess, diagnose, and manage common and complex endocrine conditions. Across seven focused modules, participants deepen their understanding of endocrine physiology, metabolic disease, and evidence-based therapeutic strategies while strengthening competencies in patient-centered care, shared decision-making, and management of chronic endocrine conditions across diverse populations. Through expert-led instruction using A/V presentations and podcast-style discussions, the program emphasizes integration of current clinical guidelines, pharmacologic advancements, and multidisciplinary team-based collaboration. By the end of the series, learners will be prepared to deliver high-quality, individualized endocrine care that improves outcomes and supports long-term patient well-being.

IMPORTANT: This is a LARGE activity. When you first register for the activity, you will not be able to see all modules of the activity in your CE Activities list. Diabetes Overview

Shannon K. Idzik, DNP, CRNP, ANP-BC, FAANP, FAAN
This module provides an essential overview of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation and treatment of diabetes. Learners review diagnostic criteria, comorbidities, and current treatment algorithms, with emphasis on pharmacotherapies that offer cardiovascular and renal benefits. Practical case examples reinforce evidence-based decision-making in complex patients.
    Objectives:
    • Describe the types of diabetes and their clinical presentation and laboratory values.
    • Summarize the available pharmacotherapies for treatment of each of the types of diabetes.
    • Select appropriate glucose-lowering pharmacotherapies based on the type of diabetes, comorbidities, and personalized goals.

    Hypoglycemia

Shannon K. Idzik, DNP, CRNP, ANP-BC, FAANP, FAAN
Learners explore the prevalence, causes, and clinical impact of hypoglycemia as a barrier to optimal glycemic control. The module covers prevention strategies, education on nutrition and lifestyle factors, and use of monitoring technology. Evidence-based treatment approaches—including glucagon options—are highlighted for safe, rapid management.
    Objectives:
    • Discuss the burden of hypoglycemia and its impact as a barrier to optimal glycemic care.
    • Review the current pharmacotherapies for treatment of hypoglycemia.
    • Identify patients who are in urgent need of a prescription for glucagon.

    Obesity

Shannon K. Idzik, DNP, CRNP, ANP-BC, FAANP, FAAN
    Sara Rose MacLeod, DO, MPH
This module examines the complex drivers of obesity and its psychosocial and clinical consequences. Participants review lifestyle interventions, the evolving pharmacotherapy landscape and surgical options. Emphasis is placed on individualized, stigma-free management strategies that support patient goals.
    Objectives:
    • Evaluate clinical trial data providing evidence for the current obesity treatment landscape.
    • Examine the pharmacotherapies for treatment of obesity.
    • Summarize lifestyle factors and behavior change options available for people living with obesity, addressing stigma and bias.
    • Develop a treatment plan for patients living with obesity that addresses their individual comorbidities, clinical risks, and personal goals.

    Pituitary Conditions

    Sara Rose MacLeod, DO, MPH
Learners review pituitary hormone regulation and the clinical presentation of structural and functional pituitary disorders. The module covers diagnostic pathways—including laboratory testing and imaging—and both pharmacologic and surgical treatment strategies. Common conditions such as prolactinoma, Cushing’s disease, and acromegaly are explored through an evidence-based lens.
    Objectives:
    • Summarize the clinical presentation of pituitary conditions including pituitary adenomas, empty sella syndrome, hypopituitarism, growth hormone deficiency, acromegaly/gigantism, AVP deficiency, and Cushing syndrome.
    • Evaluate the landscape of pharmacologic and surgical options for treating pituitary conditions.

Bone & Calcium: Osteoporosis and Parathyroid Disease

    Sara Rose MacLeod, DO, MPH
This module provides a focused overview of osteoporosis screening, diagnosis, and treatment, including pharmacologic options and lifestyle strategies to reduce fracture risk. Learners examine primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism with a focus on clinical presentation, evaluation, and management. Emerging therapies and surgical decision-making are emphasized.
    Objectives:
    • Summarize the screening tests necessary to make a diagnosis of osteoporosis and their interpretation.
    • Select the appropriate pharmacological treatment for osteoporosis based on the patient’s individualized clinical characteristics.
    • Differentiate between primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism based on laboratory and imaging evaluation.
    • Discuss the clinical trial data for and pharmacology profile of parathyroid hormone analog.

    Lipid Disorders

Shannon K. Idzik, DNP, CRNP, ANP-BC, FAANP, FAAN
Participants learn to evaluate dyslipidemias using ASCVD risk assessment, laboratory interpretation, and current guideline recommendations. The module reviews statins, adjunctive therapies, and emerging agents targeting triglycerides and Lp(a). Practical approaches to improving adherence, addressing statin intolerance, and applying shared decision-making are included.
    Objectives:
    • Describe the types of lipid disorders and their causes.
    • Summarize available lipid-lowering pharmacotherapy treatment options, highlighting the add-on options to statin therapy.
    • Develop a treatment plan for patients who are statin-intolerant or non-adherent.

    Adrenal Conditions

    Sara Rose MacLeod, DO, MPH
This module reviews adrenal hormone physiology and the clinical evaluation of structural and functional adrenal disorders. Learners explore diagnostic strategies, imaging, and medical and surgical treatment options for conditions such as adrenal insufficiency, Cushing’s syndrome, CAH, and hyperaldosteronism. Emphasis is placed on distinguishing hormone excess and deficiency states in clinical practice.
    Objectives:
    • Summarize the available pharmacotherapies for the treatment of adrenal conditions.
    • Differentiate between the adrenal conditions caused by structural abnormalities and those caused by excess or deficiency of adrenal hormones.
