COVID-19 is a novel disease with an incompletely described clinical course even in healthy individuals but especially for vulnerable populations. As front-line providers, NPs in primary care and emergency medicine need the knowledge to treat and educate patients during this unprecedented global pandemic. This activity will give the learner a solid foundation to diagnose and treat patients with COVID-19 and identify patients who are at risk for severe disease. The activity will also cover provider well-being, infection control, vaccinations and treatments in development, and appropriate use of PPE. Case studies will allow the learner to apply the knowledge gained.
Discuss the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19.
Identify patient populations at risk for severe COVID-19 disease.
Compare diagnostic tests for SARS-CoV-2.
Explain COVID-19 infection control practices for providers including guidelines for PPE use.
Review patient counseling to prevent household and community transmission of SARS-CoV-2 when infected/potentially infected.
Review current pharmacotherapeutic treatment options for hospitalized patients with COVID-19.
