The American Association of Nurse Practitioners^® (AANP) is pleased to offer select continuing education (CE) activities and resources for nurse practitioners (NPs) and other advanced practice providers working in obesity management. The Obesity Management Foundations for the Primary Care Clinician program provides advanced practice clinicians online access to a convenient, comprehensive and foundational obesity management program.

The second part of the program covers different topics in Obesity Care through the Lifespan. Content provided in these sessions builds on the foundational information of the first part of the program and gives greater detail for obesity care to a variety of patient populations. Participants may earn 12 contact hours (CH) of CE credit by completing all eleven activities in this part of the program.

By completing this Obesity Foundations Program, NPs and other clinicians can increase their understanding and foundational education on evidence-based methods for assessing, diagnosing and managing obesity within a clinical environment. The material suits NPs, physicians, physician assistants, trainee clinicians and other health care professionals who treat patients with the disease of obesity.

This presentation will explore key considerations surrounding the use of FDA-approved therapies and interventions in the pediatric population, with a focus on anti-obesity medications and metabolic/bariatric surgery. We will begin by discussing the unique FDA safety and efficacy evaluation process for medications and devices intended for use in children and adolescents. This includes the assessment of age-appropriate dosing, potential differences in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and the implementation of clinical trials specifically designed to capture the pediatric patient's experience. Next, we will discuss the use of anti-obesity medication, reviewing the safety profile of each treatment and discussing practical ways of implementing anti-obesity medications into practice. Finally, we will explore the outcomes of metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) in adolescent patients with severe obesity. This will include an overview of the safety profile, resolution of obesity-related comorbidities, and long-term impacts on growth and development, as well as the ethical considerations and patient selection criteria for these interventions.

Discuss FDA safety and efficacy process in relation to pediatric population.
Discuss outcomes of MBS in adolescents with severe obesity.

Nancy T. Browne has practiced as a pediatric nurse practitioner in pediatric surgery and pediatric weight management for 30 years. Ms. Browne holds an OMA Certificate of Advanced Education in Obesity Medicine (2020) as well as an American Association of Nurse Practitioner Obesity Certificate (2020). Ms. Browne is a Fellow with the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP), The Obesity Medicine Association (FOMA), and the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). Ms. Browne is Chair of the Obesity Medicine Association’s Pediatric committee, contributing author of the OMA Pediatric Algorithm (2018-present), and co-author of six OMA Clinical Practice Statements discussing clinical obesity care for the pediatric population. Ms. Browne is a member of the American Academy of Nursing, The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) and is involved in clinical best practice, advocacy and policy initiatives related to pediatric obesity care within each of these organizations. Ms. Browne is author of numerous publications and national presentations that include the topics of obesity pathophysiology, weight bias, association of obesity and racism, and consequences of inequities in social determinants of health.

Lisa Watson, MSN, APRN, CPNP-PC Bio

I received my BSN from the University of Florida and earned my MSN in pediatric primary care at Duke University. I also completed a post-master’s certificate in pediatric acute and chronic care. I have been a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for 17 years and have spent the past 12 years specializing in childhood obesity.

My journey as a childhood obesity specialist began in primary care. As a PNP in a general pediatric practice, I was often frustrated at my ineffectiveness in treating obesity. In 2012, I received an opportunity to join the Duke Healthy Lifestyles team. At this multidisciplinary childhood obesity treatment clinic, I trained and worked alongside national experts in the field. During my 5 years there, I not only became an expert in childhood obesity, I also became an indispensable part of the leadership team. As Clinical Lead I oversaw the day-to-day clinical operations, coordinated quality improvement efforts, and improved our delivery of care.

In 2017, my family was relocated to Charlotte, NC. I was recruited by Atrium Health to help create their own multidisciplinary childhood obesity clinic. Healthy Futures officially opened in April 2019. We are the only clinic in our region to provide advanced treatment options for childhood obesity, including anti-obesity medication management and adolescent bariatric surgery.

As Medical Director of Healthy Futures, I have implemented programs that have increased our access and improved our delivery of care. We now have two satellite sites that serve patient populations who previously could not access advanced childhood obesity care. I have also partnered with area YMCAs to create a community wellness program that is free and accessible to patients being treated at Healthy Futures. As Atrium merged with other health systems, I have helped lead efforts to create an enterprise-wide approach to childhood obesity care. I am often consulted by other community partners, including schools and surrounding clinics, on how best to develop and implement treatment interventions within the community.

I am committed to training the next generation of pediatric nurse practitioners. I am a Clinical Instructor in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program at Duke University School of Nursing. I have also served as Programs Chair and Chapter President of the North Carolina Chapter of NAPNAP. I have presented at several state and national conferences including NAPNAP, AANP, and the NC School Nurses Association. I am hopeful that these efforts are advancing childhood obesity and are creating providers who provide evidence-based, compassionate care.
