    Overview
This presentation examines the most current epidemiologic and treatment data on two of the most common categories of infection seen in long-term care settings. The first portion of this exposition will focus on respiratory tract infections, specifically on the differential diagnosis and treatment of sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonias. Topics covered will include focused history and physical examination of the respiratory system, essential diagnostic testing to differentiate between these common pulmonary infections, and pharmacologic management. Optimal treatment modalities between these three morbidities will be compared. The second portion will concentrate on urinary tract infections (UTIs), specifically on the differential diagnosis and treatment of uncomplicated and complicated UTIs. Topics covered will include focused history of the urinary system, essential diagnostic testing to differentiate between complicated and uncomplicated UTIs, and pharmacologic management. Treatment modalities between uncomplicated and complicated UTIs will be compared. The presentation will also highlight respiratory and urinary tract infection prevention strategies nurse practitioner clinicians can employ to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations requiring long-term care.

    Objectives
    • Outline epidemiologic data and trends of common respiratory infections in long-term care patients in the United States.
    • Differentially diagnose sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonias using historical, physical examination, and diagnostic data.
    • Outline epidemiologic data and trends of urinary tract infections in long-term care patients in the United States.
    • Differentially diagnose uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections using historical, physical examination, and diagnostic data.
    • Describe prevention strategies and pharmacologic management of sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonias, uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections in long-term care patients.
