Overview Pediatric myocarditis is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition that often presents with nonspecific symptoms, making early recognition a critical challenge for healthcare providers. This presentation will explore the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, and current management strategies for myocarditis in children. Through real-world case examples and the latest evidence-based guidelines, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how to identify red flags, interpret key diagnostic findings, and initiate timely interventions to improve outcomes. Emphasis will be placed on distinguishing myocarditis from other common pediatric illnesses, recognizing the subtle early signs, and supporting families through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Whether you're in the emergency room, inpatient setting, or outpatient clinic, this session will equip you with the tools to act confidently when every second counts.
Objectives
- Identify the early, often subtle, clinical signs and symptoms of pediatric myocarditis and distinguish them from common viral illnesses in various care settings.
- Explain the pathophysiology of myocarditis, including common causes and the spectrum of symptomatology and presentation in children.
- Outline a diagnostic approach, including biomarkers, ECG changes, imaging studies, and clinical red flags—that aid in the timely diagnosis of myocarditis.
- Apply current evidence-based management strategies to stabilize and treat pediatric patients with suspected or confirmed myocarditis across clinical environments.
- Demonstrate effective communication strategies to support families through the uncertainty of diagnosis, initiation of treatment, and long-term follow-up care.
- Discuss pharmacologic management of pediatric myocarditis including steroid use, antiviral medications, and IVIG.
