Overview Women veterans face unique challenges, including an increased risk of death by suicide. Often influenced by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), exposure to trauma, and military experiences, women veterans are twice as likely to die by suicide than their civilian counterparts. These numbers have escalated since the pandemic. Advanced practice providers who adopt a comprehensive trauma-informed care approach addressing the specific needs of women veterans can decrease the risk of death by suicide and promote recovery and well-being.
Objectives
- Evaluate the importance of identifying Veteran status.
- Summarize the risks associated with suicide among women Veterans.
- Describe the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), intimate partner violence (IPV), and military sexual trauma (MST) on women Veteran mental health.
- Reflect on the importance of a trauma-informed care approach to caring for women Veterans.
