Overview Empyema is a long-standing ailment that remains a significant clinical concern. In the US, approximately 1 million patients are hospitalized each year due to pneumonia, with 5-10% (about 32,000 cases annually) progressing to develop empyema. This course outlines acute pleural empyema, identifies associated risk factors and causes, summarizes key signs and symptoms, describes available diagnostic testing, and presents evidence-based treatment strategies for managing acute pleural empyema. The course is designed to be beneficial for hospital-based providers. Objectives
- Describe acute pleural empyema.
- Identify the risk factors and causes of acute pleural empyema.
- Summarize key signs and symptoms of acute pleural empyema.
- Describe available diagnostic testing for acute pleural empyema.
- List evidenced-based treatment strategies when managing acute pleural empyema.
