Overview Toxicological emergencies are commonly encountered in emergency and acute care settings, presenting varying degrees of severity. Among pediatric patients, certain substances pose significant risks, where even a small dose can prove toxic or lethal. This presentation will review common pediatric ingestants, focusing on these 'single-dose killers', highlighting clinical manifestations, and management priorities to allow nurse practitioners to manage these patients more competently.
Objectives
- Identify the single dose killers in pediatric toxicology.
- Recall the manifestations of common toxic pediatric ingestions.
- Identify indications for high dose naloxone.
- Recall indications for high dose insulin and intralipid therapy in select cardiotoxic emergencies.
