Overview Sleep disturbance has been shown to impact as much as 30-50% of infant and school age children. As much as 40% of the adolescent population is affected by sleep challenges. Problems with sleep can surround falling asleep, frequent awakenings or both. This issue has the potential to impact the quality of life of the family as well as the patient. Lack of sleep can impact children physically, cognitively, and emotionally. Studies have shown that disrupted sleep for the child can contribute to mood disturbance for parents. Additional evidence has correlated challenges in work attendance with sleep disturbances in children. This presentation will discuss common challenges in sleep in the pediatric population. Evidence based recommendations will be discussed. The presenter will describe developmentally appropriate suggestions to improve sleep from infancy through adolescence. Suggestions for the primary care NP caring managing sleep disturbances in children with neurodevelopmental disorders will also be discussed.
