Module 6
Safety and Environmental Impacts
The Occupational and Environmental Medicine Fundamentals for Advanced Practice Providers Certificate Program was developed as a collaborative education activity by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM).This program was developed to supplement on-the-job training and provides advanced practice clinicians online access to a convenient, comprehensive, foundational OEM program. Presented by AANP and ACOEM experts in the field, these CE activities offer learners the essential knowledge necessary to practice professionally in any occupational health setting, including urgent care, primary care, industry-based clinics, employee health, corporate health and more. By completing this foundational OEM program, NPs and other clinicians can increase their understanding of OEM’s many facets, improve their clinical skills and more fully develop the leadership abilities needed to manage the care of the worker.
The certificate program consists of seven modules, each dealing with a different aspect of occupational health practice. NPs and other advanced practice providers may earn 30 contact hours of CE credit by completing all seven modules. Each module includes between four and six one-hour presentations and support material on essential OEM topics. Upon completion of all seven modules and the full 30 hours of CE credit, participants will be eligible to receive an AANP Certificate of Advanced Practice Education in Occupational Health. The certificate of academic achievement demonstrates to employers, workers and peers their commitment as a clinician in the OEM field.

Industrial Toxicology – Basic Review
Dean R. Lillquist, PhD, MSPH, CIH, CSP, CHMM
The subject of industrial toxicology is commonly covered in semester long academic courses with prerequisites in biological, chemical, and statistical studies. This session will distill industrial toxicology down into basic subjects and concepts. It will define and discuss concepts and vocabulary to allow participants to understand risks associated with chemical exposures. It will also lay the foundation for the establishment of allowable levels of chemical exposures in the work environment.
Objectives:- Describe the differences and relationships of toxicity, hazard, and risk.
- Discuss the different uses and meaning for the terms acute and chronic in the context of exposures and effects.
- Recognize the elements of chemical behavior relative to toxicokinetics.
- Recognize primary target organs for common industrial chemicals.
- Describe the physiological basis of dose-response as well as common end-points.
- Discuss Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) in the context of risk management of chemical exposure.
Medical Screening and Surveillance
Virginia Weaver, MD, MPHThis session will provide an overview of key medical screening and surveillance concepts. We will define these different medical activities and discuss traditional screening as well as clinical biological monitoring. We will review key elements in a range of OSHA health standards emphasizing efficient options to identify mandatory medical screening content. We will conclude with a discussion of other authoritative resources for medical screening.
Objectives:- Understand goals of medical screening versus surveillance.
- Explain an approach to clinical biological monitoring.
- Describe efficient options to identify required medical screening in OSHA health standards.
- Review key elements in a range of OSHA health standards.
- Identify resources for medical screening programs.
Environmental Conditions for Occupational Health
Carol L. Lindsey, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANPThis course will describe the connection between the environment and occupational health. Environmental factors leading to health risks will be presented, the importance of Occupational and Environmental Exposure history will be reviewed, and a case study presented. Climate change and its impact on health with special emphasis on heat illness will be included. Other important impacts on health, especially the occupational health of outside workers and vulnerable populations will be covered. Clinicians are in a pivotal position to educate their patients and the public on the health impacts from climate change. It is important for clinicians to be aware of this connection and prepare their patients for the current and future impacts of climate change on their health.
Objectives:- Describe the connection between environmental and occupational health.
- Understand the link between the patient’s illness and an environmental or occupational exposure.
- Explain how climate change can impact the health of worker(s).
Pregnancy and Reproductive Health in the Workplace
Mazell Winikor, MD, PhDThis one hour course will focus on understanding how your patient’s occupation may affect their ability to conceive, to carry out a pregnancy, and the possible long term effects on baby. We will review the basics of the reproductive cycle, with an emphasis on where in the cycle injury can occur. We will then discuss a select group of hazards that can affect pregnancy as well as where to find information on a possible hazard. Finally, we will review how you should approach the topic of occupational safety in pregnancy with your patients.
Objectives:- Review reproductive health as it is related to pregnancy to provide optimum care for workers.
- Determine how workplace and reproductive hazards could lead to adverse outcomes.
- Discuss select hazards with critical windows in pregnancy.
- Discuss how to address occupational hazards with your pregnant patients.
