Overview Climate change is warming our world, causing heat waves or extreme heat and leading to heat illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat also affects the onset of new medical conditions, the progression of preexisting chronic conditions, and persons on certain medications. Some populations such as children, the elderly, and persons of low socioeconomic status are more vulnerable than others to heat illness. Nurse Practitioners can play a pivotal role in understanding how climate change can result in heat illness, in advancing practice to prevent and protect against these heat-related health impacts, and in advocating for heat-related health-protective policies and legislation, especially for vulnerable populations. Objectives
- Explain how climate change is increasing heat wave severity and frequency.
- Describe three heat related illnesses associated with climate change.
- Implement two actions nurse practitioners can take to prepare their patients or communities for heat related illnesses.
- Explain two ways nurses can advocate for vulnerable populations through community engagement, to reduce inequities in regard to heat illness from climate change.
