Overview This one-hour platform presentation provides an overview of headache disorders seen less frequently in primary care. Through use of case-based learning, participants are introduced to typical patient presentation, the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and diagnostic criteria for tension-type headache, trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (specific emphasis on cluster headache), benign exertional headache, and high and low headache pressure syndromes. The overlap in presentation by secondary headache disorders is addressed. Medication management, lifestyle changes, as well as procedural interventions, and the use of diagnostic testing is reviewed. Criteria for referral and the role of the primary care clinician in follow up is identified. Objectives
- Identify headache characteristics associated with trigeminal autonomic cephalalgies (TACs) and describe the treatment of these disorders.
- Describe the clinical features and treatment of trigeminal neuralgia.
- Identify those at risk for headache associated with changes in intracranial pressure and describe evidence-based treatment.
- Describe clinical characteristics associated with cranial arteritis, the rationale for urgent treatment, and interventions at the primary care level.
