Overview Infective endocarditis is defined by a focus on infection within the heart and is a feared disease by clinicians as the challenges posed by infection endocarditis (IE) are significant. With the increase in intravenous drug users, there is an increased incidence of infective endocarditis. Staphylococcus aureus, which has become the predominant causative organism in the developed world, leads to an aggressive form of the disease, often in vulnerable or elderly patient populations. With the rising increase in this disease, it is imperative that clinicians are able to recognize and treat these individuals. Learn about the types of and common causes of endocarditis, along with medical and surgical treatment measures and the latest relevant guidelines. Objectives
- Identify risk factors for endocarditis.
- Discuss appropriate measures to diagnose endocarditis.
- Discuss treatment measures for endocarditis.
- Utilize appropriate antibiotic treatment for infective endocarditis.
