Overview: In this fourth of five episodes on adolescent health, Jessica and Ashley dive deep into the influence of social media on adolescent risk-taking behaviors. Through a holistic health lens — including physical, emotional, social, and sexual development — this episode equips NPs with insight into emerging trends, the science behind adolescent decision-making, and actionable tools for primary prevention and supportive response. This activity is an Accredited AANP Podcast Activity. Learners will need to listen to the podcast through their preferred podcast provider (Search for "NP Pulse" and listen to Episode 168). A participation code will be given at the END of the podcast - make sure to write this code down. Once you've listened to the podcast and have the participation code, return to this activity in the CE Center. Click on the "Next Steps" button of the activity and (1) enter the participation code that was provided and (2) complete the activity evaluation. This will award your CE credit and certificate of completion.
Objectives- Describe the relationship between adolescent neurodevelopment and risk-taking behaviors, including how social media platforms amplify reward sensitivity, peer influence, and impulsive decision-making.
- Recognize the mental, physical, and sexual health impacts of social media use in adolescents and incorporate routine screening for digital behaviors using evidence-informed frameworks such as HEADSS/SHADES.
- Implement trauma-informed, strengths-based, and motivational interviewing strategies to engage adolescents and caregivers in developmentally appropriate, nonjudgmental conversations that support healthy social media use and overall adolescent well-being.
