Overview The opioid epidemic has influenced opioid prescribing patterns among nurse practitioners practicing in both inpatient and outpatient settings. For some adult patients, opioids may be included as part of a multimodal approach to pain management, however healthcare literacy, comorbidities, medication interactions, medication adherence, and unintentional overdose can compromise patient safety and increase their risk for death. This presentation will review the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of both opioids and naloxone and provide nurse practitioners with updates on naloxone prescribing practices, including resources for making naloxone accessible and affordable to patients. It will emphasize safe naloxone administration practices in inpatient and outpatient environments and provide an overview of educational and community resources for patients and caregivers.
Objectives
Identify the current evidence that supports naloxone use in adults with opioid toxicity in inpatient and outpatient settings.
Review the pharmacological principles that guide naloxone dosing and reduce the adverse side-effects of naloxone use.
Appraise the strategies that can improve naloxone prescribing patterns and assist with administration best practices.
