Overview Domestic violence (DV) and intimate partner violence (IPV) are critical social issues that affect individuals and communities worldwide. DV encompasses various forms of abuse, including physical, emotional, and psychological harm, typically occurring within intimate relationships. The prevalence of DV and IPV remains alarmingly high, with millions affected annually, regardless of gender, socioeconomic status, or culture. Understanding the risk and protective factors associated with DV, as well as the cyclical nature of these abusive patterns, is vital for effective intervention. This discussion will delve into the different types of DV, examine the disparate impacts on men and women, and highlight the profound effects on survivors' physical and mental health. Furthermore, an action plan will be proposed to identify survivors and address their comprehensive needs through a trauma-informed approach. Legal considerations, including the responsibilities of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) as mandatory reporters, will also be explored, alongside prevention strategies aimed at reducing the incidence of DV in our communities. Objectives Upon completion of this CE activity, the NP will be able to:
