Overview This presentation will discuss case studies encountered by nurse practitioners in ophthalmology clinics, including symptoms, signs, management, and the role of nurse practitioners in ophthalmology. Objectives
- SECTION 1: A 32 Year Old Male with Cosmetic Iris Implant
- Review the history of use of iris implants.
- Evaluate the complications of cosmetic iris implants.
- Discuss surgical removal of cosmetic implants.
- Discuss body dysmorphia.
- SECTION 2: Case Presentations
- Discuss the NP student role in specialty clinic.
- Describe the signs and symptoms of hordeolum, chalazion, and blepharitis and their management.
- Recognize differential diagnosis of hordeolum, chalazion, and blepharitis.
- Explain when hordeolum, chalazion, and blepharitis may need a referral to ophthalmology.
- SECTION 3: My Eye Hurts!
- Explain the clinical presentation of Marginal Keratitis and Herpes Simplex Epithelial Keratitis.
- Recognize the differential diagnosis of Marginal Keratitis and Herpes Simplex Epithelial Keratitis.
- Explain assessment and management.
- Describe the role of primary care NPs in the safe management of these conditions.
- SECTION 4: Blind Rehabilitation
- Discuss the prevalence of low vision and legal blindness.
- Identify difference between low vision and legal blindness.
- Describe the common clinical presentation for patients with low vision.
- Illustrate Blind Rehabilitation – how can it help patients, caregivers and providers.
- Distinguish scope of services.
- Review relevant services for patients with Low vision/blindness.
