Overview Infants who are born prematurely can face a multitude of complications for the rest of their lives. Neurodevelopmental disorders are the most commonly known, but these children can suffer from issues with their pulmonary, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal systems. With early recognition and treatment, long term outcomes are improved. It's important for providers who may be caring for patients that were born prematurely to have knowledge of these risks, how to identify the disorders and best treatment options. Close monitoring, regular follow ups and early intervention will be crucial to ensuring a healthy childhood for these patients and their families.
Objectives
- Discuss the global prevalence of preterm births and its impact on neonatal mortality.
- Explain higher risk of chronic respiratory, cardiac, renal, and endocrine system disorders for infants born prematurely.
- Discuss the importance of considering long-term health consequences beyond immediate survival and early childhood monitoring.
