Overview Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) result from a dysregulation of the immune system leading to an immune attack on the thyroid. This presentation describes the clinical value of antibody testing for diagnosis and management of thyroid patients. Autoimmune thyroid diseases are usually accompanied by the presence of anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO), anti-thyroglobulin (Tg), and thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) antibodies. The connection between TSH-receptor blocking and TSH-receptor stimulating antibodies in the management of thyroid disease will be examined. Guidelines from the American Thyroid Association and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology for the treatment of autoimmune thyroid disease with be reviewed. Objectives
Review thyroid hormone testing.
Describe thyroid autoantibodies and when to order.
Describe autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD).
Review clinical cases including pharmacologic treatment of AITD.
