Overview This presentation will focus on evaluation, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of common inpatient Gastroenterology and Hepatology conditions. This will include updates in the management of acute pancreatitis, decompensated cirrhosis, acute liver failure, alcohol related hepatitis, Gastrointestinal bleeding (upper/lower), cholangitis/choledocholithiasis, inflammatory bowel disease (flare of ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease), dysphagia, diarrhea/colitis, constipation/impactions, and ileus.
Objectives
- Discuss at least three common differentials for both upper and lower GI bleeding.
- Differentiate between cholangitis and choledocholithiasis.
- Discuss a restrictive transfusion strategy and how transfusion management changes in patients with cirrhosis.
- Describe the criteria for acute liver failure.
- Describe at least three precipitating factors for hepatic encephalopathy.
- Discuss pharmacologic management of anticoagulation during GI bleeding.
- Discuss how to differentiate oropharyngeal dysphagia from esophageal dysphagia.
- List first line pharmacologic management for patients with severe Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease.
- Discuss pharmacologic management for patients with hepatorenal syndrome and hepatic encephalopathy.
- Differentiate liver enzymes from labs that reflect liver function.
