Overview Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a serious condition that can result from a sudden impact to the head or body, leading to damage of brain tissue. Approximately 200 per 100,000 individuals experience TBI annually. Understanding TBI involves recognizing the different types of injuries, their mechanisms, signs and symptoms, as well as the management strategies and prevention methods for worsening symptoms. This presentation will provide a broad overview of TBI types, recognition of TBI symptoms and how to prevent those symptoms from becoming worse. Additionally, it will explore the management of TBI (both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic) and when rehabilitation referrals should be considered. The goal of this presentation is to improve clinical competency and increase confidence in the nurse practitioner to recognize and manage care for TBI patients. Objectives
Understand the types and mechanisms of TBI.
Recognize signs and symptoms of TBI.
Discuss action oriented management of TBI.
Explore management of TBI, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological as well as rehabilitation referrals.
Discuss TBI prevention strategies and recognition of worsening symptoms.
