Overview Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) is a bacterial infection of growing concern in sexual health. As nurse practitioners, understanding MG is crucial for effective patient care. MG is a sexually transmitted bacterium responsible for various urogenital infections. Its unique characteristics, such as antibiotic resistance and asymptomatic carriage, pose challenges for diagnosis and treatment. We'll delve into the prevalence of MG globally and its association with symptoms like urethritis, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease. We'll also explore the implications of asymptomatic MG infection, which often goes undetected but can lead to serious complications. The presentation will cover diagnostic methods, including nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), and the importance of accurate diagnosis in guiding treatment decisions. We'll discuss treatment options, antibiotic resistance patterns, and the role of patient education in preventing transmission and recurrence. As nurse practitioners, we play a vital role in MG prevention and management. We'll highlight key nursing interventions, such as sexual health counseling, partner notification, and adherence support. Patient education on safe sex practices and regular STI screening will also be emphasized. Understanding MG is essential in providing comprehensive sexual health care. Through education, vigilance, and collaboration with patients, we can mitigate the impact of MG and promote healthier outcomes.
