Overview
This multi-component continuing education program on lipid management equips nurse practitioners with evidence-based strategies to assess ASCVD risk, optimize lipid screening, and integrate emerging tools such as apoB, Lp(a), and coronary calcium scoring into practice. Through interactive case studies, participants explore real-world challenges including statin intolerance, nonstatin therapy options, and patient-centered approaches to treatment intensification. The program emphasizes shared decision-making, adherence strategies, and the use of novel lipid-lowering agents to improve outcomes and reduce cardiovascular risk across diverse patient populations.- Part 1: ASCVD Risk Assessment as a Foundation for Lipid Treatment - This session reviews best practices for evaluating ASCVD risk, including the role of traditional risk calculators, novel biomarkers (apoB, Lp(a)), and coronary calcium scoring, to guide individualized treatment strategies. Participants will gain practical tools to implement evidence-based lipid screening and early intervention.
- Part 2: Overcoming Statin Intolerance to Mitigate ASCVD Risk - This module explores the recognition and management of statin intolerance, strategies for safe rechallenge, and the use of nonstatin agents when LDL-C goals are not met. Emphasis is placed on balancing efficacy, safety, and patient preferences in lipid-lowering therapy.
- Part 3: Maximizing Treatment Adherence and Optimizing Clinical Outcomes with Nonstatin Therapies - Focusing on long-term management, this case-based module highlights barriers to adherence and introduces approaches such as shared decision-making, patient-centered communication, and extended-dosing nonstatin options. The session equips NPs to reduce treatment burden and improve patient outcomes.
Objectives
- Part 1:
- Describe current best practices for evaluating atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk, with emphasis on clinically relevant risk enhancers.
- Design an evidence-driven and guideline-concordant lipid-lowering treatment plan, encompassing both lifestyle and pharmacologic interventions, based on risk level.
- Part 2:
- Examine the burden of statin insufficiency and/or statin intolerance and the consequent need for nonstatin lipid-lowering therapeutic options.
- Review best practice approaches for improving patient adherence to lipid-lowering therapies, including the adaptive utility of novel, nonstatin agents.
- Part 3:
- Review best practice approaches for improving patient adherence to lipid-lowering therapies, including the adaptive utility of novel, nonstatin agents.
- Implement patient-centric protocols for promoting treatment adherence using shared decision-making, active communication, and novel agents with less frequent dosing.
