Overview Often, candidates for or in a series of short-term psychotherapeutic interventions disengage before or in the middle of the series of brief interventions, reducing intended therapeutic outcomes. The content of this presentation provides a brief history of motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and their combined uses as a viable model for nurse practitioner (NP) practice. Combining/justification of these approaches promotes sustained participation in brief interventions. The skills discussed will include how and when to use MI and segways into/promotion of sustained continence of CBT. Both modalities are implemented in a blended manner to promote "full dose" of CBT, the preferred and evidence-informed endpoint. NPs largely treat those with socio-economic and other barriers to continuance in health modalities, resulting in fragmented, episodic care. Achieving "full dose" in populations at high risk for social determinants of health, and its attendant barriers to continued health care engagement, is challenging for recipients of NP delivery of care. While some CBT is better than no CBT, "full dose" is best. This presentation demonstrates the practical application of motivational skills to facilitate full engagement in psychotherapeutic brief therapies to achieve "full dose", optimizing outcomes provided by NP care through combined MI/CBT.
