Overview This course equips nurse practitioners with the knowledge and clinical skills needed to identify and respond to abuse of older adults as the U.S. population ages. The course begins by addressing ageism and how language, attitudes, and stereotypes can shape care and influence recognition of mistreatment. Learners will review the major types of elder abuse—including emotional, financial, physical, neglect/abandonment, and sexual abuse—along with victim, caregiver, and institutional risk factors. Through clinical examples and case-based scenarios, participants will learn to recognize both typical and atypical presentations, interpret red flags in patient–caregiver interactions, and differentiate abuse from conditions that can mimic it. The module also introduces widely used screening tools and outlines best practices for documentation, safety planning, and mandatory reporting.
Objectives
- Understand the different types of elder abuse and create profiles of elder abuse victims and abusers.
- Recognize typical and atypical clinical presentations of elder abuse.
- Explore elder abuse reporting resources.
