Overview People who are living with serious mental illness, especially people with major depressive disorder, are at higher risk for other health problems. These problems can be worse if people experience language or cultural barriers to receiving care. The focus of this session will be on a study where the research team compared two types of care. The first type was integrated care, which includes both physical and mental health care at the same clinic. The second type was integrated care with a peer navigator. Peer navigators have backgrounds similar to patients and help patients find and use health care services. The researchers looked to see how well these two types of care worked to help Latino patients with a serious mental illness obtain the care they need. Objectives
Discuss the role of Peer Navigators.
Discuss the need for of Peer Navigators.
Discuss the impact of Peer Navigators on population outcomes.
Consider 1 advantage specific to a particular practice affiliation pertinent to Peer Navigators.
Discuss stigma reduction potential related to Patient Navigators and Programs.
