Overview This recording of a seminar from AANP's 2024 National Conference focuses on Antibiotic Stewardship and the role of nurse practitioners. Speakers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention review evidence-based frameworks for implementing stewardship practices in clinical care. Clinical cases are reviewed to demonstrate the application of antibiotic stewardship in various clinical syndromes. Additional information on managing patients with penicillin allergies and antibiotic selection will be provided. Objectives
- Part 1: Outpatient Antibiotic Prescribing: Updates from CDC and Common Myths Every NP Should Know
- Review the epidemiology of U.S. outpatient antibiotic use.
- Identify high-priority conditions for which antibiotic prescribing can be improved.
- Describe evidence-based interventions that can improve antibiotic use.
- Address common antibiotic use myths.
- Part 2: Clinical Syndromes and Case Studies
- Review clinical syndromes and case studies on common infectious illnesses in primary care.
- Delineate the current and evolving epidemiology of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) for the primary care providers.
- Compare and contrast community-acquired and hospital-acquired anti-microbial resistant SSTI infection.
- Discuss current treatment approaches for empiric SSTI management.
- Detail current screening, prevention and management strategies for sexually transmitted infection.
- Part 3: Ambulatory Antimicrobial Stewardship: Clinical Case Studies
- Apply principles of antimicrobial stewardship to common conditions seen in the primary care setting.
- Describe evidence-based recommendations for use of diagnostic testing and role in antimicrobial stewardship.
- Discuss the role of primary care nurse practitioners in antimicrobial stewardship.
- Part 4: Penicillin Allergy De-labeling: Why Allergy Testing Matters and How We Can Do Better
- Describe penicillin allergy.
- Differentiate which patients’ histories put them at risk for a true allergy and which ones don’t.
- Discuss how we can become better stewards of these labels through systematic testing.
