Overview Rheumatic Heart Disease remains endemic is low-resource countries, especially Asia, Africa, India, and Oceania with more than 300,000 pediatric deaths per year. The complexities of the Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria increase the autoimmune response and decrease the ease of vaccination development. This presentation describes the pathology, potential vaccination, the importance of clinical diagnosis for Strep infections and the need for antibiotic protocols for all countries.
Objectives
- Increase awareness of the global burden of RHD to include in differential diagnosis in children presenting with heart failure.
- Increase appreciation for the complexities and outcomes of molecular mimicry of Streptococcus pyogenes to reinforce the importance guideline treatment protocols.
- Increase understanding of why no vaccine to provide education to parents and community on Strep infections.
- Share a novel approach to increasing community awareness and nursing knowledge and skills to decrease incidence of RHD in Rwanda, Africa to showcase the importance of nursing in decreasing an endemic disease.
