Overview Echocardiography is one of the most widely used diagnostic tools in cardiology—but interpreting results and understanding its role among other cardiovascular diagnostics can be challenging for many nurse practitioners. This session offers a practical, case-based introduction to cardiovascular diagnostic testing with a focus on echocardiography. Participants will review key principles of test selection, gain a foundational understanding of echocardiogram modalities (TTE, TEE, stress echo), and learn to identify hallmark findings in common cardiovascular conditions. The session will also explore when to escalate care, collaborate with cardiology—including its subspecialties—and recognize limitations of testing. Designed for nurse practitioners who manage adult cardiovascular patients in inpatient or outpatient settings, this session emphasizes clinical relevance over technical detail. Attendees will leave with greater confidence in ordering, interpreting, and applying diagnostic testing to support timely, patient-centered decision-making.
Objectives
- Describe the appropriate use and limitations of transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography.
- Recognize key echocardiographic findings associated with common cardiovascular conditions.
- Apply diagnostic test results to guide clinical decision-making, including when to escalate care or refer to cardiology and its subspecialties.
