    Overview

This activity includes a podcast and a clinical brief. Learners can choose to complete either or both activities for credit. CE credit will be awarded individually for each activity completed.
    • Podcast Overview: In NP Pulse Podcast Episode 148, nurse practitioners Jessica Crimaldi and Christina Hanson explore the evolving landscape of ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic inflammatory bowel disease affecting over a million Americans. With decades of GI experience, Jessica and Christina break down the burden of UC on patients’ physical and psychosocial well-being, review distinguishing features from Crohn’s disease, and examine the increasing prevalence tied to lifestyle and environmental factors. This important conversation dives into the era of precision medicine, highlighting a new generation of targeted therapies, updated clinical guidelines, and best practices for early diagnosis, management, and shared decision-making. From understanding disease severity and medication classes to addressing extraintestinal manifestations, cancer screening, and vaccination recommendations, this episode is a must-listen for NPs striving to provide optimal, up-to-date care for patients with ulcerative colitis.
    • Clinical Brief Overview: The clinical brief activity offers an in-depth, evidence-based overview of the evolving landscape of ulcerative colitis (UC) management, with a particular emphasis on the nurse practitioner’s role in delivering patient-centered care. It begins by contextualizing UC as a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory bowel disease with rising incidence, especially among young adults, and highlights the profound physical, emotional, and social burdens faced by patients. The document explores the pathophysiology of UC, including epithelial barrier dysfunction and immune dysregulation, and outlines how these insights have shaped the development of advanced therapies, including biologics, small molecules, and precision medicine strategies. Emphasizing shared decision-making (SDM), the Brief presents current guidelines, comparative drug profiles, and considerations for therapy selection based on disease severity, treatment history, and patient preferences. Through illustrative case studies and clinical tools, it equips nurse practitioners with the knowledge to navigate complex treatment choices, personalize care, and improve outcomes in moderate-to-severe UC.

    Objectives

    • Discuss the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and patient-centric burden of ulcerative colitis (UC).
    • Examine how an improved understanding of UC pathogenesis and progression has driven recent advancements in the evolving and expanding treatment armamentarium.
    • Evaluate the clinical trial evidence in support of novel pharmacotherapeutics in UC management, with a focus on S1PR modulators, JAK inhibitors, and biologic mAbs aimed at the IL-12/23 axis.
    • Design individualized UC treatment plans that integrate evidence, expert consensus, and patient-specific and disease-specific factors using shared decision-making.
