Overview
A significant role of the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) is to make complex medication-prescribing decisions. Beyond symptoms, indications, and diagnoses, there are upstream and downstream considerations when making these decisions. This presentation will be a high-level view of some of the significant challenges of prescribing. Resources and tools will be provided to guide prescribing decisions that optimize patient outcomes while also being cognizant of economic, environmental, and population considerations.

Objectives

Explore the interconnectivity between NP prescriptive practices and individual, population, environmental, and economic issues.
Evaluate opportunities to utilize data related to number needed to treat/harm and risk reduction to best inform prescribing practice and high-value/person-centered care.
Assess opportunities to mitigate down-stream effects of medication management in complex chronic disease, especially related to polypharmacy, pill burden, costs, medication access, contamination, and adverse reactions.
