Overview This education targeting Nurse Practitioners (NPs) has been developed to increase awareness of child abuse and neglect, promote increased screening for child and adolescent victimization and provide guidance on early intervention, treatment and reporting.Important Note! Learners who have experienced abuse may find the content of this program difficult or triggering. We strongly encourage self-care, emotional, social, and / or behavioral support for those affected by trauma. |
Licensing Board Requirements This education on Child Abuse is accredited by AANP and intended for the continuing education of Nurse Practitioners. Nurses (RN, LVN, others) practicing where Child Abuse training is specified for initial licensure or renewal (such as NY and PA), should check that state’s regulatory board for a listing of approved providers prior to selecting this course.
Objectives
- Define child abuse, neglect and mandatory reporter.
- Understand the impact of abuse and neglect.
- Identify factors that increase risk for abuse and neglect.
- Distinguish common patterns of abuse from mimics of abuse.
- Order appropriate tests to support a diagnosis of abuse.
- Document findings consistent with abuse or neglect.
- Utilize guidelines to determine appropriate prophylaxis and/or treatment for sexually transmitted infections.
- Initiate appropriate steps for reporting and protection.
- Determine appropriate referrals and resources for child and adolescent victims of abuse.
- Identify prevention strategies to optimize health and well-being.
