Overview The prevalence of neuropathic pain worldwide has been estimated at 7-10% and the morbidities associated with diabetic neuropathy alone amount to more than $10 billion in the U.S. However, the current available treatment options, many of which have changed since our training, can improve patients’ pain by 50-80%. This presentation reviews the mechanisms of neuropathy as well as the pharmacological options, neuromodulation and complementary modalities that can decrease the suffering associated with this pain patients describe as inconsolable. These patients present across specialties and often don’t discuss their neuropathy due to the false belief that nothing can be done. Treating neuropathy, whether from metabolic causes, disease states, alcohol or toxins, does not have to be difficult; The pain does not have to be inconsolable.
Objectives
- Review three pharmacologic options for the treatment of the pain of neuropathy.
- Describe the benefits of neuromodulation for neuropathy.
- Identify two non-pharmacologic treatment options.
