Overview
Nurse practitioners can legally authorize cannabis in 17 states and the District of Columbia. Studies show that health professionals lack knowledge regarding medical cannabis and its use and are therefore uncomfortable discussing it with patients. This activity reviews the cannabis legal and regulatory issues nurse practitioners must navigate, how to take a pertinent medical history and safely prescribe cannabis with concurrent medical conditions and medications.
Objectives
Identify variations in state and federal law specific to the NPs state of practice.
Analyze cautions for cannabis use.
Evaluate examples of medical cannabis history and documentation.
Review evidence-based sources for medical cannabis pharmacotherapy information.
Analyze drug/drug and drug/medical contraindications or cautions for cannabis use.
Evaluate examples of cannabis COA and labeling.
